How does SIP Calling Work?

SIP Calling takes advantage of Session Initiation Protocol to make calls over the internet. It follows this process:

  1. When a user is making a call, the client device—the device used to initiate the call—sends a request to the SIP server in order to establish a connection.
  2. The SIP server, then, routes the call to the recipient’s device, which can be another SIP client or a traditional phone number.
  3. During the call, the voice data is transformed into data packets, and then it is sent over the internet in real time using Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP).
  4. Once the call is done, the session closes and resources are freed up to accommodate the next user.

Why should your business switch to SIP Calling?

Switching to SIP Calling means modernising your business communication. It allows your organisation to consolidate all your communication lines in a single platform and access advanced communication tools at a lower cost. What’s more is that SIP Calling allows your business to accommodate remote or hybrid work setups and to maximise the functionalities afforded by digital devices. This is certainly a step in the right direction for modern enterprises that want to stay competitive in the modern age.

How is SIP different from VoIP?

While often used interchangeably, SIP and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are not one and the same. VoIP refers to the technologies that allow people to make voice calls over the internet, and SIP is one of the protocols that enable VoIP. In this sense, the two terms are closely related. However, consider that VoIP can also use other protocols to carry out voice calls over the internet, not just SIP. Meanwhile, SIP is a signaling protocol that is often used to set up and take down multimedia sessions, which can include not just voice calls, but also text and video.

Network edge was given the opportunity to re-win our business in a competitive tender. Their bid was well priced and satisfied our need for big increases in bandwidth across all services, and the upgrade project was completed with minimal impact.
